Shabana FC winger Brian Michira has expressed optimism about his Harambee Stars debut at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), praising coach Benni McCarthy for preparing him despite not featuring so far.
Michira received a late call-up to the national team, replacing former Kenya Police FC winger Mohammed Bajaber after his move to Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
Since the tournament kicked off, the youngster is yet to make an appearance, but he hopes to get his chance when Harambee Stars face Madagascar in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 22.
Kenya reached the last eight after a strong group stage campaign that included a 1-0 win over two-time champions DR Congo, a 1-1 draw against Angola, a victory over Morocco, and another triumph against Zambia.
Michira admitted that joining the squad late meant he had to adjust quickly but feels he has now caught up with the rest of the team. He credited McCarthy for guiding him through key drills.
“I want to stay patient because I know my time will come. I received a late call-up, but I have now understood a few things from the coach, and when the time comes, I will show them why I’m here,” Michira told Line Sports News.
Although he has not played yet, Michira has already benefited financially, earning more than Ksh 5 million following President William Ruto’s pledge to reward the team. The President promised Ksh 1 million for every win, Ksh 500,000 for a draw, and Ksh 2.5 million if the team goes on to win the tournament.
“I feel great because, as a team, everyone is working hard, and that’s a great thing. This is something that has helped us to push beyond the limits, and most players always go out of the country to make such a huge amount of money,” he added.
“But I’m grateful to the President for this initiative. Now people believe that football actually pays. This is a signal we have sent out there; it means that next season, the league will be very tough and competitive.”
