Harambee Stars captain Aboud Omar has described Marvin Nabwire’s red card during their clash against Angola as a blessing in disguise, crediting him as Kenya’s true hero of the day.
In their second group stage fixture at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), Harambee Stars were aiming to build on their previous win, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Angola took an early lead in the 7th minute through Jo Paciencia, only for Austin Odhiambo to respond swiftly with a penalty equaliser in the 12th minute. The game took a dramatic turn in the 21st minute when Marvin Nabwire was shown a red card.
Initially booked with a yellow, Nabwire’s challenge was reviewed by VAR, prompting referee Sadou Ali Brahamou to upgrade it to a straight red. The foul, committed outside the penalty area, was deemed to have denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity—an automatic red card according to the rules.
The situation arose after goalkeeper Bryne Omondi mishandled a backpass, failing to properly clear the ball and putting the team under pressure.
Despite being reduced to ten men, the Harambee Stars dug deep—something Aboud Omar attributes to the team’s determination to honour Nabwire’s sacrifice.
The Kenya Police FC defender shared that Nabwire’s dismissal ignited a fighting spirit among the players, pushing them to avoid defeat in his name.
According to Omar, Nabwire’s selfless play inspired especially the younger members of the squad to step up and demonstrate their readiness for the big stage.
“First of all, I think we have to appreciate Marvin Nabwire because he is our hero, because without him tackling the guy, we could have been down. He took one for the team, and the boys saw what happened and knew they had to play for him,” Aboud Omar said after the match.
“I think it has been a good game because most of the players are young, but they are also mature, and they know what they want to do, and they have helped a lot.”
