Bayern Munich have officially completed the signing of Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Liverpool for a reported €75 million (£65.5 million). The 28-year-old, who has been a standout performer in the Premier League, was unveiled by the Bundesliga champions on Wednesday, July 30, and will don the iconic number 14 shirt for his new club, a number previously worn by club legends like Claudio Pizarro.

The transfer marks a significant statement of intent from Bayern as they aim to reclaim their dominance in both domestic and European competitions under manager Vincent Kompany.

Diaz’s move to Bayern ends his three-and-a-half-year stint at Liverpool, where he played a pivotal role in their Premier League title triumph last season, alongside winning the FA Cup and two League Cups. The winger, renowned for his electrifying pace, dribbling ability, and relentless work rate, leaves Anfield having scored 41 goals in 148 appearances.

His final season with the Reds was his most prolific, netting 17 goals across all competitions, including a memorable hat-trick in a 4-0 Champions League rout of Bayer Leverkusen. However, with two years left on his contract and interest from Bayern intensifying, Liverpool reluctantly agreed to the transfer after rejecting an initial £58.6 million bid earlier this month.

Upon his arrival in Munich, Diaz expressed his gratitude to Liverpool and excitement for his new chapter. “I arrived at Liverpool with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” Diaz wrote on Instagram. “Now, I’m thrilled to join Bayern Munich, a club with incredible history and ambition. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and contribute to our success.” The Colombian, who has signed a contract until July 2029, is expected to train with his new teammates for the first time on Wednesday and could make his debut in a friendly against Lyon on Saturday.

Bayern’s pursuit of Diaz underscores their need to bolster their attacking options, particularly following the departure of Leroy Sane to Galatasaray and the long-term injury to Jamal Musiala, who suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen hailed the signing, stating, “In Luis Diaz, we have succeeded in bringing in one of the best left wingers in the Premier League. His versatility, goal threat, and work rate make him a perfect fit for our ambitions.” Diaz’s ability to play across the front line, including as a false nine—a role in which he thrived under Liverpool’s Arne Slot—adds significant flexibility to Kompany’s squad.

The number 14 shirt, now assigned to Diaz, carries a storied legacy at Bayern. While not as synonymous with the club as the number 7 or 11, it has been worn by players who left a lasting impact, and Diaz will aim to emulate their success.

His statistical output at Liverpool—18.3% shot conversion rate, 52 completed dribbles, and 22 instances of winning possession in the final third in the 2024-25 Premier League season—suggests he is primed to make an immediate impact in Bavaria. Kompany, speaking at a press conference, praised Diaz’s tenacity: “Luis brings energy and quality that will elevate our attack. He’s a fighter on the pitch, and that’s exactly what we need.”
