Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the signing of Brazilian forward Joao Pedro from Brighton and Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £60 million. The 23-year-old, who has signed a seven-year contract with the Blues, is set to join Enzo Maresca’s squad in the United States ahead of their Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras on Friday. The transfer, which includes a £55 million base fee and £5 million in potential add-ons, marks another significant move for Chelsea as they bolster their attacking options for the 2025-26 season.
Pedro, a versatile forward capable of playing as a centre-forward, second striker, or attacking midfielder, brings a wealth of Premier League experience to Stamford Bridge. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2023, he made an immediate impact, scoring 19 goals in all competitions during his debut season and finishing as the Seagulls’ joint-top scorer. Over two seasons, he netted 30 goals in 70 appearances, showcasing his ability to link play and create chances with a creative threat rated in the 92nd percentile among forwards. His technical quality and ability to drop deep to progress attacks align perfectly with Maresca’s possession-based system, which emphasizes control and sustained attacking sequences.
The transfer comes on the heels of Chelsea’s recent signings, including Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million and the imminent arrival of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens for around £55 million. Unlike Gittens, who is cup-tied for the Club World Cup, Pedro is eligible to make his Chelsea debut against Palmeiras, thanks to FIFA rules allowing player registrations between the tournament’s group and knockout stages. The Brazilian, who has three caps for his national team, expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history. They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now. So I am excited to join, and you know when you are a Chelsea player, you must think one thing—win.”
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler described the transfer as “a good move for all parties,” highlighting the club’s strong return on their investment in Pedro and their depth in attacking talent. The deal also includes a clause ensuring Brighton receives a percentage of any future transfer fee. Pedro’s departure follows a reported training ground altercation with teammate Jan Paul van Hecke, which led to him missing Brighton’s final two matches of the season. Despite this, his contributions over two seasons were praised, with Hurzeler noting, “Joao has given us some wonderful moments.”
Chelsea’s pursuit of Pedro saw them fend off competition from Newcastle United, who had a bid rejected, as well as interest from Arsenal and Liverpool. The player’s preference for a move to London and Chelsea’s long-standing interest, which began with a £58 million approach in June, helped seal the deal. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Pedro completed his medical in the United States, with the contract finalized until June 2032.
This signing adds to Chelsea’s already formidable attacking lineup, which includes Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, and others. However, it may signal the departure of Christopher Nkunku, with reports suggesting his exit is increasingly likely. Chelsea remain active in the transfer market, with interest in West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus and potential moves for a centre-back, indicating Maresca’s ambition to reshape the squad for both domestic and international challenges.
