Jorrel Hato Declares Ajax as “Home” Despite Transfer Speculation

Despite the allure of the Premier League, Hato’s focus remains on his growth at Ajax, where he made his senior debut at just 16 years and 335 days, becoming the third-youngest player to do so in the club’s storied history.

Ajax’s teenage sensation Jorrel Hato has reaffirmed his deep connection to the club, describing it as “home” amid fervent interest from some of Europe’s top clubs. The 19-year-old defender, who has already made over 111 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, is at the center of a transfer tug-of-war, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and even Real Madrid reportedly vying for his signature. However, Hato’s latest comments suggest he is in no rush to leave the Johan Cruyff Arena.

In a recent interview with Ajax club media, Hato expressed his contentment with life in Amsterdam, stating, “Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here.” His remarks come as a blow to Premier League clubs, particularly Arsenal, who have reportedly initiated contact with Ajax to explore a potential summer move. Sources indicate the Gunners see Hato as a long-term investment, with his versatility to play as both a left-back and center-back making him an ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s squad. However, Ajax’s asking price, rumored to be around €55 million (£42 million), and Hato’s own reluctance to depart could complicate negotiations.

Chelsea have also emerged as strong contenders, having held initial conversations with Ajax officials in recent weeks. The Blues view Hato as a potential upgrade for their defensive line, particularly as a deputy for Marc Cucurella at left-back or an option at center-back. Liverpool, meanwhile, have kept tabs on the Dutch international, with their interest intensifying after missing out on other defensive targets. Hato’s appearance at Anfield in January, invited by compatriot Ryan Gravenberch to watch Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Ipswich, fueled speculation of a move to Merseyside. Yet, Hato clarified at the time, “For my development, it’s best that I stay at Ajax now.”

Despite the allure of the Premier League, Hato’s focus remains on his growth at Ajax, where he made his senior debut at just 16 years and 335 days, becoming the third-youngest player to do so in the club’s storied history. His rapid rise has seen him earn six caps for the Netherlands senior team, including a debut in November 2023 during a Euro 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar. Hato’s composure on the ball and defensive acumen have drawn comparisons to former Ajax stars like Matthijs de Ligt, but he insists he is not driven by short-term ambitions. “I still have plenty of time,” Hato said. “I don’t think: I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years.” His ultimate dream, he revealed, is to lift the World Cup with the Netherlands.

Ajax, who finished second in the Eredivisie this season after a dramatic late collapse, are under no immediate pressure to sell. Hato’s contract, extended in March 2024, runs until 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted, “It’s not an easy negotiation with Ajax; he’s a very important player for them.” The Dutch giants have a history of nurturing talent and securing high fees for their stars, as seen with past transfers like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luis Suarez. Should Hato depart, Ajax have already identified 17-year-old Jorthy Mokio as a potential replacement, signaling their confidence in their youth pipeline.
