Inter Milan have set their sights on Como manager Cesc Fabregas as the prime candidate to replace outgoing head coach Simone Inzaghi, according to multiple reports circulating on social media and in Italian football circles. The Nerazzurri, fresh off a successful 2024/25 season that saw them reach the UEFA Champions League final, are preparing for a potential transition as Inzaghi is heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

Inzaghi, who has been at the helm since 2021, has transformed Inter into a dominant force in Serie A and a competitive outfit in Europe. His tenure culminated in a Serie A title in April 2024 and a second Champions League final appearance in 2025, solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s elite managers. However, recent posts on X suggest that Al Hilal is increasingly confident of securing Inzaghi’s signature within the next 24 to 48 hours, prompting Inter to act swiftly to identify a successor.

Cesc Fabregas, the former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder, has emerged as the leading contender to take over at the San Siro. The 38-year-old Spaniard has made a swift transition from player to coach, earning plaudits for his work at Como, a newly promoted Serie A side. Fabregas, who retired from playing in 2023, has guided Como to a respectable campaign, with his tactical acumen and ability to instill an attacking philosophy catching the attention of Inter’s hierarchy. Sources indicate that Inter have already made initial contact with Fabregas, unwilling to be caught unprepared should Inzaghi depart.

Fabregas’ rapid rise in coaching has not gone unnoticed, with posts on X highlighting his appeal to top clubs across Europe. His success at Como, combined with his storied playing career, has positioned him as a bold and ambitious choice for Inter. The club’s interest in Fabregas is not new, as reports as early as February 2025 noted Inter’s monitoring of his progress, alongside other clubs. By May, Italian media outlets like Sport Mediaset and Corriere dello Sport had named Fabregas as a potential replacement, with additional candidates like Roberto De Zerbi, Patrick Vieira, and Stefano Pioli also mentioned as options.

The potential appointment of Fabregas represents a shift toward a younger, progressive managerial profile for Inter. His experience as a player under coaches like Arsène Wenger, Pep Guardiola, and José Mourinho has equipped him with a deep understanding of the game, which he has translated into his early managerial career. At Como, Fabregas has implemented a possession-based style, emphasizing quick transitions and creative freedom, which aligns with Inter’s ambitions to remain a force in both domestic and European competitions.

However, Fabregas’ appointment is not without challenges. His relative inexperience at the highest level could be a gamble for a club of Inter’s stature, especially following Inzaghi’s trophy-laden tenure. Additionally, Fabregas’ commitment to Como, where he has expressed contentment, may complicate negotiations. Posts on X indicate that Inter’s pursuit hinges on Fabregas’ willingness to leave Como and take on the pressures of managing a club with immediate title expectations.
