Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has addressed the growing speculation surrounding the future of Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, outlining the conditions under which the South African tactician can leave his role before his contract expires.
McCarthy, who signed on to lead Kenya’s national team through to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—is still firmly in charge. Recent reports have linked the former Manchester United forwards’ coach with potential returns to South Africa, specifically to club roles at Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. However, FKF has downplayed these rumors.
Currently, McCarthy is focused on preparing the national team for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament scheduled for August.
In an interview with Citizen TV, Hussein Mohammed dismissed the idea that McCarthy is departing anytime soon, though he did confirm that the coach’s contract includes a clause allowing either party to terminate the agreement under specific conditions.
“We have a clear agreement in the contract that either party must give notice if they wish to terminate the agreement. It’s a short notice period, around two to three months, and either side can trigger it. We have a very clear exit plan,” Hussein explained.
Regarding McCarthy’s salary, the FKF President refrained from sharing details, emphasizing that the financial aspects of the deal are confidential.
“Benni McCarthy’s contract runs until after the 2027 AFCON. He is employed like any other professional, and his payment terms are personal to him. Unless he consents, we cannot publicly discuss his salary—it’s not a matter of public debate.”
Hussein also dismissed claims that McCarthy earns Ksh8 million per month.
“I’d rather he addresses the issue himself. It’s a private matter, and the figures being circulated are inaccurate. It would be best if it came from him, so he’s comfortable with what’s shared publicly,” he added.
For now, Benni McCarthy remains at the helm of Harambee Stars, with no official move on the horizon.
