Postecoglou Slams Critics for Undermining Tottenham’s Europa League Success

Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach, Ange Postecoglou, has launched a passionate defense of his team’s Europa League campaign, accusing critics of attempting to “diminish” their achievements out of fear that Spurs could lift the trophy. The fiery remarks came after Tottenham secured a 2-0 victory over Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League semi-final second leg on May 8, 2025, clinching a 5-1 aggregate win and a place in the final against Manchester United. The match, played at Bodø/Glimt’s Aspmyra Stadion in Norway, saw goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro, setting up an all-English showdown in Bilbao on May 21.

Postecoglou’s comments were sparked by ongoing debates questioning the significance of Tottenham’s European run, particularly in light of their dismal Premier League campaign, where they languish in 16th place. Some pundits, including former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, have argued that the Europa League winner should not automatically qualify for the Champions League, a view Postecoglou dismissed with characteristic wit. “Spurs does crazy things to people,” he quipped, suggesting that criticism of Tottenham’s achievements is often rooted in bias rather than reason. He expressed respect for Wenger but insisted that such comments are part of a broader effort to downplay Spurs’ potential success.

The Australian manager was particularly incensed by suggestions that winning the Europa League would be akin to Manchester United winning the FA Cup, a comparison he rejected outright. “No, it ain’t. I’m sorry, not on any planet is it the equivalent,” Postecoglou said, emphasizing the prestige of a European title. He argued that the narrative around Tottenham is unfairly negative, with critics “fearing” that the club might actually end their 17-year trophy drought. “What’s happening right now is that people are fearing that it might actually happen, and because it might happen, they’re saying, let’s see how we can tear it down,” he told reporters after the Bodø/Glimt match.

Tottenham’s journey to the Europa League final has been a bright spot in an otherwise challenging season. Despite injuries to key players like James Maddison, who is out for the season with a knee injury, and Lucas Bergvall, sidelined with an ankle issue, Spurs have shown resilience in Europe. Their semi-final performance was a masterclass in game management, with Solanke’s close-range finish and Porro’s stunning long-range strike silencing the Norwegian side. Postecoglou praised his players’ ability to adapt, noting, “I love winning. That’s all I’ve done my whole career. People are dismissive of it, that’s fine. I love the way the boys clearly understood what we needed to do tonight.”

The victory has reignited hope among Tottenham fans, who have endured years of near-misses and disappointment. Postecoglou, who has spoken about watching European finals with his father as a child in Australia, understands the emotional weight of the moment. “I’ve got friends who I grew up with who are probably booking tickets to Bilbao,” he said, reflecting on the personal significance of reaching a European final. However, he remains under pressure, with some, like former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister, speculating that even a Europa League triumph might not secure his position at the club.

Postecoglou’s defiance extends beyond the pitch. He has consistently pushed back against what he perceives as a “negative narrative” surrounding Tottenham, a sentiment echoed by midfielder James Maddison before his injury. Maddison had declared the squad’s full support for their manager, insisting they could still make the season “something very special.”
