Violent scenes marred the FKF Premier League clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia FC at Gusii Stadium on Saturday, leaving 72 people injured and sparking widespread concern from football authorities and fans alike.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued an official statement condemning the violence that erupted during the match, calling the incident “deeply concerning.” According to FKF, confirmed reports from five hospitals and the police indicate that 72 individuals were treated for various injuries. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is deeply concerned by the unfortunate scenes of violence that occurred during today’s FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia FC at Gusii Stadium,” the Federation said in the statement released on May 4.

FKF emphasized its strong stance against violence in stadiums, stating, “Football must remain a sport that brings people together – not one that puts lives at risk. The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remains a top priority for the Federation.”

In response to the incident, FKF confirmed it is collaborating with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the unrest. “We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.”

The Federation also urged the public and media outlets to avoid spreading unverified information. “We urge members of the public and the media to refrain from circulating unverified reports, particularly claims of fatalities.”

Looking ahead, FKF assured the public that it will monitor the situation closely and communicate any new developments. “FKF will continue to monitor the situation and will provide timely updates to the public should any new developments arise.

As investigations continue, FKF called on all stakeholders to work together: “Let us all work together to protect the image, integrity, and safety of Kenyan football.”
