National Super League side Nairobi United pulled off a thrilling upset against FKF Premier League club KCB FC in the Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16 clash held on Saturday, April 12. After a tense 0-0 draw in regular time, the match was settled through a dramatic penalty shootout, where Nairobi United triumphed 6-5 in sudden death.

Both teams had converted four penalties each in the initial five rounds. The deadlock extended until the seventh round when KCB faltered, allowing Nairobi United to seize the opportunity and book their spot in the quarterfinals.

Speaking after the victory, Nairobi United head coach Nicholas Muyoti shared insights into his team’s approach. “I just told my boys to enjoy themselves. In the first half, we did not play our game as we sat deep to avoid conceding because we knew KCB would bring the game to us. In the second half, we made more attacking changes, had more punch, created good chances but were unfortunate not to score,” he said.

Having already knocked out top-tier sides Tusker and KCB, Nairobi United is becoming the surprise package of the tournament. Muyoti expressed confidence heading into the next stage. “We do not know who we are facing next, but we are ready for whoever is coming. I told my boys that this is their tournament, and it is for them to decide whether they want to lift it or not,” he added.

He also acknowledged the broader impact the cup run could have on their league ambitions. “This is a good tournament for us, a chance for continental football as well as a good preparation and motivation for the final stages of our league.”

Above all, Muyoti credited the team’s unity and divine support for their progress. “I thank God for the win and the players, my technical bench as well as the management for their efforts in making all these possible. It has been a team effort to reach this stage.” Nairobi United now marches into the quarterfinals with momentum, belief, and the backing of a growing fanbase inspired by their fairytale run.
