The Bahrain International Circuit came alive under the floodlights for the fourth round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, delivering a race full of strategy, speed, and celebration for McLaren. In a commanding performance, the Woking-based team clinched a double podium, with Oscar Piastri taking his second victory of the season and Lando Norris securing third, marking McLaren’s first-ever win in Bahrain.

The race began with Piastri starting from pole position after a dominant qualifying session, where he set a blistering 1:29.841s lap time. Despite a strong challenge from Mercedes’ George Russell, who briefly took second at the start, Piastri maintained his composure and led the majority of the 57-lap race. Norris, starting from sixth after a disappointing qualifying, made an electrifying start, gaining three places on the opening lap to position himself for a podium fight.

The Bahrain circuit, known for its overtaking opportunities and abrasive surface, tested teams with tire strategy. Piastri and Norris capitalized on McLaren’s MCL39’s pace and tire management, navigating a mix of medium and hard compounds effectively. “The car felt fantastic,” Piastri said post-race. “We knew tire strategy would be key, and the team executed perfectly.”

A key moment came mid-race when Norris engaged in a fierce battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for the final podium spot. Despite Leclerc’s defensive driving, Norris’ persistence paid off, overtaking the Ferrari at Turn 4 to secure third. “It was intense out there,” Norris admitted. “Charles didn’t make it easy, but we had the pace to make it stick.”

Russell held on for second, splitting the McLaren duo, but couldn’t challenge Piastri’s lead in the closing stages. The Australian crossed the line to claim his third career victory, sparking jubilant scenes in the McLaren garage. “This one’s special,” Piastri added, noting the significance of winning in Bahrain, a track owned by McLaren’s stakeholders.

McLaren’s 1-3 finish extended their lead in the Constructors’ Championship, while Norris maintained his Drivers’ Championship lead, now just one point ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who finished sixth after struggling with pace. The result capped a stellar weekend for McLaren, who had topped both practice sessions and qualifying, signaling their intent to dominate in 2025.

Team Principal Andrea Stella praised the team’s efforts: “Oscar drove a flawless race, and Lando’s recovery was brilliant. This double podium is a testament to the hard work back at the factory and here at the track.”

The race wasn’t without drama elsewhere. Williams’ Carlos Sainz retired after a sidepod failure, while several drivers faced post-race investigations for minor infringements. However, the night belonged to McLaren, whose papaya-colored cars lit up Sakhir’s desert sky.
