The Bahrain International Circuit came alive under the floodlights for the fourth round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, delivering a race full of strategy, speed, and celebration for McLaren. In a commanding performance, the Woking-based team clinched a double podium, with Oscar Piastri taking his second victory of the season and Lando Norris securing third, marking McLarenâs first-ever win in Bahrain.
The race began with Piastri starting from pole position after a dominant qualifying session, where he set a blistering 1:29.841s lap time. Despite a strong challenge from Mercedesâ George Russell, who briefly took second at the start, Piastri maintained his composure and led the majority of the 57-lap race. Norris, starting from sixth after a disappointing qualifying, made an electrifying start, gaining three places on the opening lap to position himself for a podium fight.
The Bahrain circuit, known for its overtaking opportunities and abrasive surface, tested teams with tire strategy. Piastri and Norris capitalized on McLarenâs MCL39âs pace and tire management, navigating a mix of medium and hard compounds effectively. âThe car felt fantastic,â Piastri said post-race. âWe knew tire strategy would be key, and the team executed perfectly.â
A key moment came mid-race when Norris engaged in a fierce battle with Ferrariâs Charles Leclerc for the final podium spot. Despite Leclercâs defensive driving, Norrisâ persistence paid off, overtaking the Ferrari at Turn 4 to secure third. âIt was intense out there,â Norris admitted. âCharles didnât make it easy, but we had the pace to make it stick.â
Russell held on for second, splitting the McLaren duo, but couldnât challenge Piastriâs lead in the closing stages. The Australian crossed the line to claim his third career victory, sparking jubilant scenes in the McLaren garage. âThis oneâs special,â Piastri added, noting the significance of winning in Bahrain, a track owned by McLarenâs stakeholders.
McLarenâs 1-3 finish extended their lead in the Constructorsâ Championship, while Norris maintained his Driversâ Championship lead, now just one point ahead of Red Bullâs Max Verstappen, who finished sixth after struggling with pace. The result capped a stellar weekend for McLaren, who had topped both practice sessions and qualifying, signaling their intent to dominate in 2025.
Team Principal Andrea Stella praised the teamâs efforts: âOscar drove a flawless race, and Landoâs recovery was brilliant. This double podium is a testament to the hard work back at the factory and here at the track.â
The race wasnât without drama elsewhere. Williamsâ Carlos Sainz retired after a sidepod failure, while several drivers faced post-race investigations for minor infringements. However, the night belonged to McLaren, whose papaya-colored cars lit up Sakhirâs desert sky.
