Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make a bold move for River Plate’s 17-year-old sensation Franco Mastantuono, a versatile attacking midfielder who has taken Argentine football by storm. According to multiple sources, including The Sun and Yahoo Sports, the Premier League giants are considering triggering the youngster’s £38 million (€45 million) release clause in the summer transfer window, aiming to secure his signature ahead of a host of European rivals.

Mastantuono, dubbed “El Phil Foden argentino” by British media for his stylistic similarities to Manchester City’s star, has dazzled with his ball control, vision, and ability to unbalance defenses. The Argentina U20 international made history last season as River Plate’s youngest-ever goalscorer at just 16 years and five months, surpassing a record previously set by Javier Saviola. This season, he has contributed three goals and two assists, showcasing his ability to play behind the striker or on the wing.

Under the guidance of manager Ruben Amorim, Manchester United are prioritizing creative midfielders to bolster their attacking options, particularly after striker Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles in front of goal. Amorim, who initially adopted a wait-and-watch approach in January, is now convinced of Mastantuono’s potential to transform United’s frontline. The club’s hierarchy, backed by INEOS, sees the teenager as a continuation of their strategy to invest in the world’s brightest young talents, following successful deals for Leny Yoro and Chido Obi.

However, United face stiff competition. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and AC Milan have all been linked with Mastantuono, whose release clause could rise to €45 million in the final days of the transfer window. River Plate, keen to retain their star until at least December 2026, are unlikely to negotiate below the clause, with club officials acknowledging the difficulty of resisting such lucrative offers.

Tottenham Hotspur had previously emerged as frontrunners, reportedly engaging in talks with River Plate to secure Mastantuono at a reduced price. However, United’s renewed focus and financial muscle could shift the race in their favor, especially as they navigate financial limitations tied to plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium.
