Bayern Munich’s star striker Harry Kane didn’t hold back his frustration following the team’s 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday night at the Allianz Arena. The England captain, reflecting on the defeat, accused the Italian side of prematurely celebrating as if they had already secured their place in the semi-finals.
The match saw Bayern dominate much of the proceedings, only to be undone by clinical finishing from Inter. Lautaro Martínez opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a stunning strike, assisted by Marcus Thuram, before substitute Thomas Müller appeared to salvage a draw for Bayern with an 85th-minute equalizer. However, Inter’s Davide Frattesi delivered a late blow, scoring in the 88th minute to secure a vital 2-1 victory and a slender advantage heading into the second leg at the San Siro.
Kane, who had a golden opportunity to put Bayern ahead in the first half but struck the post, expressed disappointment in the result but remained defiant. “It was a tough game. Inter are a very good team, but I think we were in control for large spells, especially in the second half,” Kane told reporters after the match. “I thought it was a dominant performance. It’s disappointing to concede the way we did. Obviously, it leaves a bad feeling.”
The 31-year-old then took aim at Inter’s exuberant celebrations following Frattesi’s late winner. “At the end, they celebrated like they were already through—like they’d won the tie,” Kane remarked. “But it’s still all to play for. We’ve got the second leg, and we know what we’re capable of. We’ll go there with a positive feeling.”
Bayern’s loss marked their first Champions League home defeat in 23 matches, ending an impressive run and putting their hopes of reaching the final—at their own Allianz Arena—under threat. Despite the setback, Kane’s comments reflect a steely determination to turn the tie around in Milan. The England captain, who has scored 10 goals in the competition this season, will be pivotal if Bayern are to overturn the deficit and keep their European dreams alive.
