Aston Villa delivered a commanding performance at the Amex Stadium, securing a 3-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in a Premier League clash on Wednesday night. The victory, powered by goals from Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio, and Donyell Malen, propelled Villa to seventh in the league standings, leapfrogging their hosts and bolstering their hopes of a Champions League spot.

The match, which kicked off at 7:45 PM, showcased Villa’s clinical edge in front of goal, a stark contrast to Brighton’s inability to convert their chances. Unai Emery’s side entered the game on a high, riding a five-match winning streak across all competitions, and they wasted no time asserting their dominance in this crucial midweek fixture.

The opening 45 minutes saw both teams probing for an advantage, but neither could break the deadlock. Brighton, under Fabian Hürzeler, pressed high and created opportunities, with Kaoru Mitoma and João Pedro testing Villa’s defense. However, Emiliano Martínez stood firm in goal, thwarting any real threat. Villa, meanwhile, relied on swift counterattacks, with Morgan Rogers and Rashford linking up well but failing to find the final touch before the interval.

The home side thought they had a case for a penalty when Yasin Ayari’s free-kick struck Jacob Ramsey’s arm in the box, but referee Stuart Attwell waved play on, leaving the Amex crowd frustrated. Villa also had a penalty shout denied when Jack Hinshelwood appeared to clip Ramsey, though VAR upheld the on-field decision after a lengthy review.

The game turned decisively in Villa’s favor after the break. Just six minutes into the second half, Rashford opened the scoring with his first Premier League goal since joining Villa on loan from Manchester United in February. The move began with a Brighton corner that Villa cleared, allowing Rogers to launch a rapid counter. His precise long ball found Rashford, who coolly slotted past Bart Verbruggen to send the traveling Villa fans into raptures.

Brighton responded with intent, and Simon Adingra thought he had equalized moments later, sweeping the ball home from close range. However, VAR intervened, ruling out the goal for a handball by Mitoma in the buildup—a decision that sparked debate but stood firm. The disallowed goal seemed to sap Brighton’s momentum, and Villa capitalized ruthlessly.

In the 78th minute, substitute Marco Asensio doubled the lead with a powerful first-time finish from inside the box, latching onto a cutback from Rogers. The Spaniard, another loanee making an impact, celebrated with the Villa bench as Emery’s tactical substitutions paid dividends. The rout was completed in stoppage time when Donyell Malen, also off the bench, slotted home a third after a slick team move, marking his first goal for the club.

Unai Emery praised his team’s resilience and finishing. “We knew Brighton would come at us, but we stayed compact and took our chances,” he said. “Marcus, Marco, and Donyell showed their quality tonight—it’s a big win for us in the race for Europe.”

Fabian Hürzeler, meanwhile, lamented his side’s lack of cutting edge. “We created enough to get something from the game, but we weren’t clinical, and they were,” he admitted. “The VAR decisions didn’t go our way, but we can’t use that as an excuse.”

The result sees Aston Villa climb to 48 points, one behind sixth-placed Chelsea, who face Tottenham on Thursday. Brighton, now eighth with 47 points, face a quick turnaround as they prepare to visit rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday. Villa, buoyed by this performance, host Nottingham Forest in a Midlands derby on the same day, with their sights firmly set on a top-five finish.
