FC Barcelona secured their place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a commanding 3-1 victory over Benfica in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The Catalan giants, carrying a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Lisbon, delivered a scintillating performance to clinch a 4-1 aggregate triumph, propelled by the brilliance of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

The match, played on a crisp Tuesday evening in Barcelona, was charged with emotion following the recent passing of club doctor Carles Miñarro Garcia. A minute’s silence was observed before kickoff, and the Blaugrana seemed galvanized by the occasion, putting on a display that showcased their attacking flair and defensive resilience.

Barcelona wasted no time asserting their dominance. Just 10 minutes in, Raphinha opened the scoring with a clinical volley at the far post, capitalizing on a dazzling piece of skill from 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal. Yamal bamboozled two Benfica defenders with a deft move at the edge of the box before delivering a pinpoint pass to his teammate, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Benfica, however, responded swiftly. In the 12th minute, veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi rose highest to head in a corner, briefly silencing the Montjuïc faithful and leveling the score at 1-1. The goal injected life into the Portuguese side, who needed at least two goals to force extra time after their first-leg defeat.

Undeterred, Barcelona regained control in the 26th minute when Yamal etched his name onto the scoresheet. The teenage prodigy latched onto a through ball from Pedri, outpaced the Benfica backline, and slotted a cool finish past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. The strike underscored why Yamal is being hailed as one of football’s brightest prospects.

Raphinha sealed the deal just before halftime, scoring his second of the night in the 41st minute. A swift counterattack saw Dani Olmo release the Brazilian winger, who cut inside and unleashed a curling shot into the top corner, leaving Trubin with no chance. At 3-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate, Barcelona headed into the break with a seemingly unassailable lead.

The second half saw Benfica push forward in search of a miracle, but Barcelona’s defense, marshaled by Ronald Araujo and Iñigo Martínez, stood firm. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, who had been heroic in the first leg, made a series of crucial saves to preserve the two-goal cushion. Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis, who had tormented Barça in the first leg, found himself frustrated by the hosts’ compact shape.

Despite introducing substitutes like Renato Sanches, Benfica struggled to create clear-cut chances. Barcelona, meanwhile, managed the game expertly, with Frenkie de Jong and Pedri dictating the tempo in midfield. The final whistle sparked celebrations among the home supporters, who reveled in their team’s emphatic progression.
