Here are nine interesting facts about Verstappen that highlight his remarkable career and life both on and off the track.

1. He started racing at an astonishingly young age

Verstappen’s racing journey began at the tender age of four, when his father, Jos Verstappen, a former F1 driver, introduced him to karting. Born on September 30, 1997, in Hasselt, Belgium, Max was practically raised around engines and racetracks. By the age of seven, he was already competing in karting events, and at six, he participated in his first race in 2003. His natural talent shone through early, as he won all 21 races in the 2005 Belgium Championship Mini (VAS) at just eight years old.

2. He was too young to drive legally when he entered F1

One of the most remarkable facts about Verstappen is that he made his Formula 1 debut before he was legally allowed to drive a car on public roads. At just 17 years and 166 days old, he competed in his first F1 race at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix with Scuderia Toro Rosso, making him the youngest driver in F1 history. At the time, he didn’t even have a driver’s license, which he humorously addressed by joking about preparing “caps and T-shirts” to bribe his driving instructor. His debut at such a young age prompted the FIA to introduce the “Verstappen Rule,” mandating that drivers must be at least 18 years old to compete in Formula 1, ensuring his record as the youngest F1 driver will likely remain unbroken.

3. He comes from a racing family

Racing is in Verstappen’s blood. His father, Jos Verstappen, was a Formula 1 driver from 1994 to 2003, competing in 107 races and securing two podium finishes. Jos, nicknamed “The Boss,” played a pivotal role in Max’s development, mentoring him from his earliest karting days and instilling a relentless work ethic. Max’s mother, Sophie Kumpen, was also a talented kart racer who competed at a high level, finishing ninth in the Formula A World Championship at age 16 and racing against future F1 stars like Jenson Button and Christian Horner (now Red Bull Racing’s team principal).

4. He holds dual nationality

While Verstappen proudly races under the Dutch flag, he was actually born in Hasselt, Belgium, and holds dual Dutch and Belgian citizenship. His mother, Sophie, is Belgian, while his father, Jos, is Dutch, giving him ties to both nations. This dual nationality means that both the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort and the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps are considered “home races” for him. Despite his Belgian roots, Max has often expressed feeling more Dutch due to his upbringing and the significant support he receives from Dutch fans, who famously turn out in droves wearing orange to cheer him on.

5. His first F1 win came on his Red Bull debut

Verstappen’s ascent to stardom was cemented with a stunning victory at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, his very first race with Red Bull Racing. Promoted from Toro Rosso to the senior Red Bull team after just four races into the 2016 season, Verstappen capitalized on a chaotic race where the leading Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, collided and retired. At just 18 years and 228 days old, he became the youngest driver to win an F1 race, a record that still stands.

6. He’s a sim racing prodigy

Beyond the F1 cockpit, Verstappen is a highly skilled sim racer with a passion for virtual racing. He frequently competes in online racing simulations like iRacing and the official Formula 1 game, often partnering with Team Redline, a leading esports team. His sim racing achievements include winning the virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2020 and the Virtual 24 Hours of Spa in 2019 alongside fellow F1 driver Lando Norris.

7. He has a passion for luxury vehicles and private jets

Verstappen’s success on the track has afforded him a lavish lifestyle, including an impressive collection of luxury cars and private aircraft. His car collection features iconic models like the Ferrari Monza SP2 (one of only 500 made, with a base price of $1.8 million), a Ferrari 488 Pista, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and several Aston Martins. In addition to his cars, Verstappen has owned private jets, including a Dassault Falcon 900EX purchased in 2020 (later sold in 2025) and a Dassault Falcon 8X acquired in February 2025.

8. He’s a multilingual talent

Verstappen’s international upbringing and racing career have made him a polyglot. He is fluent in three languages: Dutch, English, and German. His German fluency developed during his karting years, particularly while racing alongside Michael Schumacher, the legendary seven-time F1 World Champion.
